The problem

Sparkcraft needed a publishing platform for African technology coverage — e-mobility, fintech, innovation and digital transformation. A publication that cannot be found in search and cannot reliably reach its subscribers is not a publication, so discovery and delivery were requirements from the start rather than a later phase.

Context

Two audiences again: readers arriving mostly from search, and editors publishing without developer involvement. The platform had to be indexable by default and administrable by writers.

My role

Application development, subscription and content workflows, email integration, technical SEO, deployment and ongoing maintenance. I architected and launched it during my work at Sparkcraft Consulting.

Engineering decisions

Technical SEO built into the templates

Metadata, canonical URLs, an XML sitemap, robots directives and semantic document structure are generated by the article templates rather than maintained by hand per post. SEO applied afterwards to a publishing platform is remediation; built into the templates it is simply correct output.

Subscription and delivery as one workflow

Subscriber capture and newsletter delivery were designed together — a subscriber list that is not wired to a working delivery path is a database table, not a newsletter.

Authenticated SMTP over host mail

Delivery goes through PHPMailer over authenticated SMTP for the same reason as CrossLife: shared-host mail is not dependable enough to build a subscription product on.

Key features

  • Subscriber and newsletter registration workflows
  • Email delivery through PHPMailer and SMTP
  • Content management and article administration
  • Technical SEO, responsive layout and contact workflows

Performance, SEO and maintenance

Metadata and structured content are template-level concerns; the sitemap and robots directives are maintained with the platform, and indexing is monitored through Google Search Console. Maintenance is ongoing rather than handed off at launch.

Outcome

ChargedAfrica publishes at chargedafrica.com with editors managing articles directly, subscribers captured and served through the platform, and content indexed for search.
